[…] 3 Reasons Why Beta Blockers Could … – I’ve read compelling arguments both for and against the use of beta-blockers in the performing arts and can understand why many in the field have strong … […]Since β2 adrenergic receptors can cause vascular smooth muscle dilation, beta blockers may cause some vasoconstriction. However, this effect tends to be small because the activity of β2 receptors is overshadowed by the more dominant vasoconstricting α1 receptors. By far the greatest effect of beta blockers remains in the heart. Newer, third-generation beta blockers can cause vasodilation through blockade of alpha-adrenergic receptors. Betablocker reduzieren die mit der Redeangst verbundenen störenden Körperreaktionen ohne jedoch die Denkleistung zu beeinträchtigen. Adverse drug reactions associated with the use of beta blockers include: nausea, diarrhea, bronchospasm, dyspnea, cold extremities, exacerbation of Raynaud's syndrome, bradycardia, hypotension, heart failure, heart block, fatigue, dizziness, alopecia (hair loss), abnormal vision, hallucinations, insomnia, nightmares, sexual dysfunction, erectile dysfunction and/or alteration of glucose and lipid metabolism. Mixed α1/β-antagonist therapy is also commonly associated with orthostatic hypotension. Carvedilol therapy is commonly associated with edema. Due to the high penetration across the blood–brain barrier, lipophilic beta blockers, such as propranolol and metoprolol, are more likely than other less lipophilic beta blockers to cause sleep disturbances, such as insomnia, vivid dreams and nightmares. Additionally, there is research supporting their efficacy for anxiety. They tend to significantly reduce all symptoms associated with the “fight-or-flight” response such as: perspiration, palpitations, body temperature changes, and muscle tension. This allows people with anxiety to focus and not become further anxious over physical symptoms; they lower heart rate and reduce tremors. The use of beta blockers around the time of cardiac surgery decreases the risk of heart dysrhythmias. Starting them around the time of other types of surgery, however, may worsen outcomes.
You can take a 20 to 40 mg dose of propranolol as needed about one hour before a stressful situation. If necessary, you can also combine it with imipramine or alprazolam without adverse effects.I don’t think Noa is making a cold financial calculation, though. I think (if I can be presumptuous here) he teaches teenagers who might be really prone to looking for quick solutions and as a result feels that the “drugs will not fix the problem” stance is needed. With teens, it may be. But anyhow … I just wanted to reply that listening to people like yourself has caused at least one person’s opinion to shift and grow softer on the use of BB.Performance anxiety as well as generalized social anxiety can be controlled with what is classed as a psychiatric stress management program and with the use of beta-adrenergic blocking agents or beta blockers.Emotions certainly are affected by the physical. When I have an attack of racing heart, I’m often very tired and sometimes depressed. I feel like I’ve been assaulted. I really don’t need that. I perform every weekend. Without the perfume/cologne and heart issues, I wouldn’t need the beta-blocker. I’m done with guilt trips. With my own string quartet, I don’t take the beta-blocker because my colleagues know better, but playing elsewhere I can’t always trust people around me. There is the musician I sat next to who when I asked her to please wash off her perfume, said defensively “I only put it on this morning” and “If I don’t wear a perfume someone else will.” Because of people like that I am forced to take a beta-blocker.I really don’t take propranolol for any anxiety issues and the dosage that I am prescribed is ridiculously large in comparison to those that do. I take it as a prophylaxis for my migraine, to keep my blood pressure under control as well as keeping my heart rate in the 60’s. Seriously, I take 160 mg twice a day and at that dose i’m very familiar with the fact that it does not mentally help directly with anxiety. However, the simple fact that it prevents the physical manifestations of anxiety itself is such a huge mental relief that it does indirectly ease the feeling of anxiety.
As a recently retired Emergency Physician and SWAT officer, performance anxiety really is a life & death issue. One alternative to beta blockers is over-the-counter ImmodiumAD. The effects vary considerably from person to person with somnolence as a potential side-effect, however it often is enough to blunt the fight or flight response that interferes with the focal concentration required to execute complex and delicate tasks. And for me, constipation just before a performance is NEVER an issue!Adverse effects associated with β2-adrenergic receptor antagonist activity (bronchospasm, peripheral vasoconstriction, alteration of glucose and lipid metabolism) are less common with β1-selective (often termed "cardioselective") agents, but receptor selectivity diminishes at higher doses. Beta blockade, especially of the beta-1 receptor at the macula densa, inhibits renin release, thus decreasing the release of aldosterone. This causes hyponatremia and hyperkalemia. Musicians, public speakers, actors, and professional dancers have been known to use beta blockers to avoid performance anxiety, stage fright, and tremor during both auditions and public performances. The application to stage fright was first recognized in The Lancet in 1976, and by 1987, a survey conducted by the International Conference of Symphony Orchestra Musicians, representing the 51 largest orchestras in the United States, revealed 27% of its musicians had used beta blockers and 70% obtained them from friends, not physicians. Beta blockers are inexpensive, said to be relatively safe, and on one hand, seem to improve musicians' performances on a technical level, while some, such as Barry Green, the author of "The Inner Game of Music" and Don Greene, a former Olympic diving coach who teaches Juilliard students to overcome their stage fright naturally, say the performances may be perceived as "soulless and inauthentic".
Beta blockers are usually considered relatively low by doctors on the hierarchy of treatments for anxiety, but should arguably be prescribed ahead of benzodiazepines as they are not habit forming nor are they associated with dementia. In cases of anxiety with comorbid hypertension or heart problems, using a beta blocker for anxiety may prove to be the perfect option. With that said, usually several other classes of medications will be tried before beta blockers.Propranolol (Inderal LA / InnoPran XL): This is a non-selective beta blocker and is considered a “sympatholytic” drug, meaning it inhibits function within the sympathetic nervous system. It is considered the first effective beta blocker and is used for a variety of conditions. It is prescribed for high blood pressure, heart problems, tremors, migraines, cluster headaches, PTSD, aggression, performance anxiety, generalized anxiety, panic attacks, and blushing. It is sometimes used off-label to help people cope with performance anxiety and stage fright.I think then it becomes a question of how addictive are they? Because if the answer is they’re not then there is no reason to be against them.Large differences exist in the pharmacology of agents within the class, thus not all beta blockers are used for all indications listed below.
Performance anxiety is complex. There is no easy quick fix or magic pill that will change how you perform and respond to pressure overnight. However, there are many strategies and skills you can learn and integrate into your practice and performance habits, which when mastered and used in concert with one another, will help you take your performing to a whole new level. Not only will you find yourself performing at a higher level, but you will likely feel differently about performing, to the point that you may even begin looking forward to and welcoming the adrenaline rush. These are some of the most lifesaving and widely prescribed drugs ON THE PLANET. Please be aware of that so that you avoid concluding that those of us who need them to live are inherently crappy musicians and will never be any good, solely because some other people have decided to use OUR lifesaving medicine as a crutch for them to avoid dealing with their own issues in a more productive way.
Beta blockers are not advised for use by those who have any form or respiratory disease such as asthma or emphysema, as well as those with diabetes or any form of heart disease.A quibble here, and this is something that’s always bothered me about this argument. I get why musicians don’t want to use something external as a crutch to avoid dealing with a mental or psychological issue but … there are millions of people who have no choice but to use these things every day of our lives. Millions of people in this country have heart disease, and listening to the fearmongering that beta blockers will destroy your mind, turn you into a sedated blob, and make you into the world’s crappiest musician is very, very problematic for those of us who must take them, and in doses greater than any classical musician would ever take. I’m a classically trained pianist who plays all her own music. I also have Marfan Syndrome, inherited from my father who died of it. My mom has very high blood pressure. What that means is that every single member of my family is on beta blockers. We rolled genetic snake-eyes. Most orchestra violinists nibble on the edge of a pill — I take 100mg a DAY of this stuff. And I must do it or risk sudden cardiac death or the blowing out of my aorta. My dad died of that, my oldest brother has more plastic in his heart than he has in his wallet, and my mom and older brother have blood pressure that could stun a horse.I was fortunate to have a wise and sympathetic doctor when I was 19 and recovering from almost a complete breakdown in my ability to play. He prescribed beta-blockers in very small numbers and encouraged me to see them as a tool to help me break a cycle of self-fulfilling catastrophising. I can remember him saying, ‘These won’t help you if you come to depend on them, so I am not going to let you have enough for that to happen.’You may find that actually, natural remedies may work better for you than beta blockers due to the fact that most herbal alternatives promote a feeling of calm and relaxation. Reducing the feeling of anxiety and worry will, in turn, reduce the physical symptoms. Unlike beta blockers which may physically prevent you showing any signs of anxiety, but still leave you with a feeling of dread.
Beta blockers must not be used in the treatment of selective alpha-adrenergic agonist overdose. The blockade of only beta receptors increases blood pressure, reduces coronary blood flow, left ventricular function, and cardiac output and tissue perfusion by means of leaving the alpha-adrenergic system stimulation unopposed.[medical citation needed] Beta blockers with lipophilic properties and CNS penetration such as metoprolol and labetalol may be useful for treating CNS and cardiovascular toxicity from a methamphetamine overdose. The mixed alpha- and beta blocker labetalol is especially useful for treatment of concomitant tachycardia and hypertension induced by methamphetamine. The phenomenon of "unopposed alpha stimulation" has not been reported with the use of beta blockers for treatment of methamphetamine toxicity. Other appropriate antihypertensive drugs to administer during hypertensive crisis resulting from stimulant overdose are vasodilators such as nitroglycerin, diuretics such as furosemide, and alpha blockers such as phentolamine. Download Psychologische Therapie der Migräne Download Documen Propranolol is the only agent indicated for control of tremor, portal hypertension, and esophageal variceal bleeding, and used in conjunction with α-blocker therapy in phaeochromocytoma. These reactions are all part of the sympathetic nervous system response, often referred to as the “fight or flight” response. Essentially, any time you are faced with a stressful, new, or challenging situation, an alarm goes off in your body and all of the systems related to strength and energy turn on, and all other non-essential systems (immune system, digestive system, reproductive system, growth processes, etc.) temporarily shut down. This is a great survival response that will serve you well if you ever need to fight off or run away from an angry bear, but will make nailing your audition more challenging if you don’t know how to properly channel all of this extra strength and energy.
For some people, using correct breathing or shifting focus can be enough to give them enough relaxation to be able to power through their anxiety. Some pre-clinical and clinical research suggests that some beta blockers may be beneficial for cancer treatment. However, other studies do not show a correlation between cancer survival and beta blocker usage. Also, a 2017 meta-analysis failed to show any benefit for the use of beta blockers in breast cancer.
My first time on beta blockers I saw zero improvement (and obviously no placebo effect!). But overtime, with the help of my physician, I perfected the dose and the timing (for me, 10mg of propranolol 90 mins before performance). I can not possibly overstate what this has done for me. I now play with confidence, joy and absolute clarity. My hours of practice are manifest in my performances. I am literally getting teary typing this because of the happiness this has brought me. Live music is fun again! Taking Beta Blockers for Anxiety: The Benefits and Side Effects Beta blockers reduce the effects of adrenaline in the body and, today, many people are prescribed beta blockers to help with anxiety. In times of stress and emergency the adrenal gland produces adrenaline (a stress hormone) that acts on various organs in the body to enable us to. Weight gain can occur as a side effect of some beta blockers, especially the older ones, such as cardioselective beta blockers including atenolol (Tenormin) and metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol-XL). The average weight gain is about 2.6 pounds (about 1.2 kilograms). Newer beta blockers, such as carvedilol (Coreg), don't usually cause weight gain as a side effect. Weight may rise in the first weeks of taking the beta blocker and then generally stabilizes. its one thing for someone to write a blog post about a certain disorder, but its plain as day when it comes from someone who has no experience with the symptoms yes, there are underlying symptoms to social phobias but unless u experience physical manifestations totally beyond ur control when u simply need to stand up and give a speech, ur advice simply doesn’t hold its own weight im a confident person in every situation except public speaking when i have to speak in front of a crowd larger than 20, i lock up……..i cant help it yes, i can go see a shrink etc…….but ive started taking inderal for the physical symptoms and i feel “normal” i only take the drug every now and then, so its hardly a health concern…… it simply helps////so before writing a blog post simply to write a blog post and boost readership, check in a little with the people u are writing about so ur more informed in a real world sense I was abruptly taken off of my beta blocker (Toporol Xl 25 mg. ) 3 months ago. After the first 24 hours I began to experience horrific symptoms...a racing heart, increased blood pressure and worst of all severe anxiety. My heart has settled down some along with my blood pressure however I continue to experienc
There are many essential oils out there, but the best essential oils for reducing the symptoms of anxiety and promoting a more calm feeling include:Think of the difference between studio recordings and live performance. Studio recordings tend to be clean, controlled, and of a very high technical quality level. Live performances are often technically inferior, but much more exciting, dynamic, and inspiring. You tend to feel a live performance more than a studio recording, right? There is a reason why many prefer live performances, whether it be classical, jazz, or rock concert. When the artist is willing to go for it and not just play it safe, the performances can be inspiring and electric.Beta blockers, which include Inderal (propranolol), Toprol (metoprolol) and Tenormin (atenolol) among others, have been used in general medicine since the late 1960s.
In some cases performance anxiety can be controlled through calming techniques – we have all heard of picturing the audience naked!Although beta blockers were once contraindicated in congestive heart failure, as they have the potential to worsen the condition due to their effect of decreasing cardiac contractility, studies in the late 1990s showed their efficacy at reducing morbidity and mortality. Bisoprolol, carvedilol, and sustained-release metoprolol are specifically indicated as adjuncts to standard ACE inhibitor and diuretic therapy in congestive heart failure, although at doses typically much lower than those indicated for other conditions. Beta blockers are only indicated in cases of compensated, stable congestive heart failure; in cases of acute decompensated heart failure, beta blockers will cause a further decrease in ejection fraction, worsening the patient's current symptoms. The sad part is I can tell you right now beta blockers don’t really help anyway. It’s a placebo. It has never once helped me magically somersault over my own red-light syndrome or stage fear — not once. I know that people don’t want to get dependent on drugs to solve problems that have other solutions, but heart disease HAS no other solution but these drugs, and it really bothers me that the implication is that anyone with any medical need for them is automatically damaged goods and has no business making music because you’ve all convinced yourselves that metaprolol turns me into an unmusical jelly-brained zombie who has nothing of emotional value to say to anyone and is incapable of “moving” anyone. *argh*Beta blockers have also been used for the treatment of schizoid personality disorder. However, there is limited evidence supporting the efficacy of supplemental beta-blocker use in addition to antipsychotic drugs for treating schizophrenia. Best beta blocker for anxiety? I'm prescribed propranol but I find it tends to make me feel tired and lethargic. I've just now stumbled upon another beta blocker called atenolol that is similar but does not cross the bbb very much or at all thus having no central nervous system sides (like drowsiness)
Echoing what Janis has to say: yes, these drugs, like ALL drugs, have their medical place. The choice to use a beta blocker for performance anxiety needs to be weighed very carefully, just as the choice to use any medication needs to be carefully considered. As someone with metastatic breast cancer, I can tell you that I am often offered many different, often addictive substances for dealing with pain. When I really need the drugs for pain, I do not get addicted to them; they are a temporary fix. If I were to have heart disease, of course I would use a beta blocker for its life-saving qualities. I do not believe that if I were to use a beta blocker for its original purpose, I would suffer some of the other side effects of feeling disconnected from my performance, but I might. The preventive nature of the beta blocker outweighs the risks of not taking the drug.. And that rush of adrenaline and emotional roller coaster you experience before performances is totally normal too. : any of a group of drugs (as propranolol) that combine with and block the activity of a beta-receptor to decrease the heart rate and force of contractions and lower high blood pressure and that are used especially to treat hypertension, angina pectoris, and ventricular and supraventricular arrhythmias — compare alpha-blocker More from Merriam-Webster on beta-blocker Rhyming Dictionary: Words that rhyme with beta-blocker Britannica.com: Encyclopedia article about beta-blocker Comments on beta-blocker What made you want to look up beta-blocker? Accessed 20 May. 2020.While beta blockers effectively target the physical effects, the mental and emotional effects (such as focus and concentration issues, self-doubt, self-criticism, over-analysis, memory slips, and feelings of panic) are not directly addressed by the beta blockers. Though we tend to be preoccupied with the physical effects of anxiety, there are studies which suggest that the mental and emotional components of performance anxiety are more to blame for poor performances than the physical elements. The stuff in this article is probably true for many musicians, but I’ve always needed the beta blockers to perform. A few years ago I tried performing a concerto without them and I blanked out for almost an entire page before picking up again because I was so nervous. Also at an audition I took too low of a dosage on accident and I gave the worst performance of my prelude I had ever given. The results didn’t turn out well, but I’m over it now. I now feel that for me it would be unwise to come off them. Great article though!
[…] https://bulletproofmusician.com/3-reasons-why-beta-blockers-could-ultimately-be-holding-you-back/ […]You cannot reach peak performance without beta blockers, too much adrenaline make you act without thinking, youll get stronger and faster with adrenaline but the mental control you need to perform is gone. I myself too easily lose control of what im saying when im worked up, and i get worked up too easily. I dont start totally babbling so easily but i end up talking too fast and say things i rather shouldnt have, sometimes i get mild symptoms even in fairly normal day to day situations. Most of my life before starting on a low dose beta blockers (tried several ands carvedilol works best) is a fog to me, its still hard for me to talk about it because its hard to admit that despite my 135 IQ i was living in a fog where i often had insufficient control over what i did and said plus a lower than average self awareness, considerable difference compared to now. For the record, my blood work has always come back clean, i have no diagnosable metabolic or hormonal condition causing this. I can speak before a crowd without beta blockers and i have done it, im not THAT much an extreme case, but my whole life is better with them, my health is considerably better, and my heart is finally getting rest from the elevated heart rate i used to have so the risk of heart conditions and stroke is severely reduced.
Beta blockers are drugs that act on “beta receptors” within tissues of the sympathetic nervous system to inhibit stimulatory hormones such as epinephrine and norepinephrine. Medically they are utilized primarily to help manage cardiac arrhythmias, prevent heart attacks, and reduce blood pressure. The first effective beta blockers were documented in the early 1960s as a treatment for chest pain as a result of heart disease.Antianginal effects result from negative chronotropic and inotropic effects, which decrease cardiac workload and oxygen demand. Negative chronotropic properties of beta blockers allow the lifesaving property of heart rate control. Beta blockers are readily titrated to optimal rate control in many pathologic states. Cardioselective beta-blocker (β1 blockers), if really required, can be prescribed at the least possible dose to those with mild to moderate respiratory symptoms. β2-agonists can somewhat mitigate β-Blocker-induced bronchospasm where it exerts greater efficacy on reversing selective β-blocker-induced bronchospasm than the nonselective β-blocker-induced worsening asthma and/or COPD.
85 yrs. Look after husband with dementia. Huge spikes in B/P re stress. I have found propranolol 40mg taken at night, six hourly certainly helps. It will happen in daytime but mostly small hours. I have pulsatile tinnitus which gives me warning will even wake me at night. Dr wont prescribe propranolol. Gives antenolol and it is useless. .I was placed on the lowest dosage of Toprol because a higher dosage dropped my heart rate too low. About 2 weeks after taking Toprol, I noticed that something was different about me. I totally lost my social phobia. Public speaking was not longer a problem for me. I began to enjoy speaking with others. It has been 9 years and all I need is the one 25 milligram pill a day. Toprol changed my life.
Although beta blockers can be helpful in reducing the physical symptoms of performance anxiety, it is important to note that they are typically ineffective when it comes to reducing internal symptoms of anxiety caused by the fight-or-flight response.. Also, they should only be considered as a short term solution.
Wow, this is definitely not true for me. I am much better in rehearsal and do my best when totally alone. I feel open, free, creative, bold, and energetic. When a roomful of eyeballs are on me, I shut down. Throat closes, hands shake, fear rules. I considered looking into BB many years ago, when I still could have had a career, but was afraid of potential negative effects. I guess I decided my health was ultimately more important. But often wonder what might have been if I had been able to get the stage fright under control. The 2007 National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) asthma guidelines recommend against the use of non-selective beta blockers in asthmatics, while allowing for the use of cardioselective beta blockers.:182 Moreover, it is definitely worth discussing with a professional as they may be able to work with you in order to find the route cause of your anxiety.I have always suffered from anxiety and social phobia. It wasn’t noticeable by most people because I kept my feelings stuffer. Tranquilizers helped but I was afraid I’d become addicted. SSRIs did not. However, many controlled trials in the past 25 years indicate beta blockers are effective in anxiety disorders, though the mechanism of action is not known. The physiological symptoms of the fight-or-flight response (pounding heart, cold/clammy hands, increased respiration, sweating, etc.) are significantly reduced, thus enabling anxious individuals to concentrate on the task at hand.

And it is much easier to generate some less destructive self-talk when you have a couple of performances under your belt in which you’ve not disgraced yourself.
I have social anxiety, basically strong performance anxiety and stage fright. It occurs sometimes when performing, but can also occur in almost any social situation, like answering the door / phone and posting comments on articles. I’ll have clumsy hands, a shaky voice, forgetfulness… and become very embarrassed of those symptoms, which itself creates a kind of feedback loop that is very distracting. It makes networking difficult. But beta blockers stop my embarrassment at the physical symptoms by reducing them. They are not eliminated, but that fight-or-flight response is easier to channel. As a result, sometimes I actually need them to get into The Zone. They don’t make me feel out of it or even slightly zombie-like. I’m familiar with that feeling, and as a result avoid some medications. I’ve tried meditation, more practicing, talk therapy, visualization, and some related things. They’re not enough for me, but I still do them because they help.Understand that not everyone will want to try a beta blocker to treat anxiety and not everyone will respond well to them. Sotalol, in particular, has additional antiarrhythmic properties and prolongs action potential duration through potassium channel blockade.

These drugs are not commonly prescribed for anxiety. With that said, if you are taking one for a heart condition, you may find that it helps certain physical symptoms of anxiety.
In 1964, James Black synthesized the first clinically significant beta blockers—propranolol and pronethalol; it revolutionized the medical management of angina pectoris and is considered by many to be one of the most important contributions to clinical medicine and pharmacology of the 20th century. As a pharmacist with nearly 30 years in retail practice I would say sorry, there is no perfect go-to beta blocker for anxiety. Having said that you probably have enough knowledge to be aware that there are beta receptor sites in many places around.. Thanks for the positive approach to performance anxiety. As a violinist aspiring to be professional, I like to think that a bit of adrenalin is necessary to give the performance a bit of extra something special. I agree that beta blockers are absolutely essential for people undergoing extreme cases of stage fright, however I sincerely believe that people should try to use it only as a crutch, to help them get back on their feet. I personally think it may be damaging to become addicted to them. I’m currently doing my research project on Improvisation and Performance Anxiety, and I’m exploring the question of whether a type of “Improvisation Therapy” could be used as an antidote to Performance Anxiety. Such a debilitating condition seems extremely unfair for those who suffer from it, yet love playing music. I think that improvisation, as well as therapies like Alexander Technique and meditation could be helpful for musicians to regain a sense of enjoyment in their music-making. Jim I am not a medical doctor but am researching long qt syndrome and know that beta blockers are commonly prescribed for sufferers and sufferers are unable to take Immodium as it can cause sudden cardiac death. Please be careful. For some, taking the tremors, heart rate, etc. off the table does indeed help facilitate more mental calm and focus and helps them perform better. But others continue worrying, and experience a great deal of cognitive anxiety regardless, and don’t seem to benefit quite so much. I’ve had a number of students or clients who were already using beta blockers when we met, and many did find it easier to continue using them to some degree while working on and incorporating new mental skills and approaches into their performances and preparation, and gradually weaning themselves off over time. Then there were some who continued to utilize beta blockers even after our work was finished too, and weren’t necessarily looking to reduce their use in the short term at least. Ultimately, I think it’s often a personal decision about timing, and when feels right to start making changes.
Some beta blockers (e.g., labetalol and carvedilol) exhibit mixed antagonism of both β- and α1-adrenergic receptors, which provides additional arteriolar vasodilating action. […] Noa Kageyama, a psychologist specializing in musician’s performance anxiety, said this is shortsighted, […]Beta blockers are antagonists of adrenergic functioning within the body. When a person experiences a high level of stress, epinephrine and other stress hormones bind to various receptors, creating physical symptoms of anxiety like palpitations, sweating, and muscle tension. Beta blockers function by preventing epinephrine and other stimulating hormones from binding to their designated receptors, thereby diminishing the body’s stress response.Agents with ISA are not used after myocardial infarctions, as they have not been demonstrated to be beneficial. They may also be less effective than other beta blockers in the management of angina and tachyarrhythmia.
Beta blockers, which include Inderal (propranolol), Toprol (metoprolol) and Tenormin (atenolol) among others, have been used in general medicine since the late 1960s. These drugs block beta receptors in the heart, thus, cardiac output, blood pressure and heart rate are reduced. This led to beta-blocker use in the treatment of a number of. Thanks for the perspective – a significant number of musicians do indeed take beta blockers for existing health concerns. And yes, it’s fortunate that this doesn’t turn them into lifeless zombies on stage. Beta-Blocker.
Despite what you hear from people who swear by them, and even what you read in the popular press, the jury is still out on how much of an impact they have on meaningful aspects of performance. Most of the evidence supporting their use is anecdotal, as many of the controlled studies investigating beta-blockers and music performance quality fail to provide conclusive evidence supporting more widespread use.I had been taking the absolute maximum recommended dose of Xanax, then was switched to Klonopin (both at 3 mg) for general anxiety. Honestly, the only reason I weaned myself off of that was the contempt and hassle I would constantly get from one particular pharmacist. Looking back, I am so glad that I was content to just imagine what I wanted to do with that person. Anyway, it was around that time that I was switched from Topamax to Inderal and that (not even aware of the anti-anxiety effects) made it easier to stop taking the benzos. Just want to point out that it really does help, if you need it for what it is prescribed to me for and the side benefits for me can’t be dismissed. They certainly helped me get off those benzos and I really had no clue that they were helping me by alleviating the physical symptoms of my anxiety. art and entertainment; music; Psychologie und Denk-Muster für Entwicklung

Taking a pill every day can be a bother, especially if you are already taking a plethora of multivitamins and supplements like I am!Click below to discover the 7 skills that are characteristic of top performers. Learn how you can develop these into strengths of your own. And begin to see tangible improvements in your playing that transfer to the stage.I don’t want to pay to listen to someone who is fearful, and if their bodies react that way to their adrenaline, and they’ve tried everything in the universe to deal with it, then who the hell am I to demand that they suffer through misery and terror? How musical can one be when one is busy trying not to pass out?I still have friends who pop Inderol like it’s candy, convinced that if they don’t have it, they’re going to bomb their performances and never get hired again. It’s this frame of mind that scares me. I’ve found that the best way to get around stage fright is to feel over-prepared for everything. Sometimes that’s not easy, especially when you’re playing an orchestra gig with tough repertoire that you only get a couple of days to learn, but then the trick is to just do your best and learn to forgive. When we embrace the process rather than the outcome of perfection, life – and music – generally becomes more rewarding, I’ve found.

Wo das Leben doch voller Hindernisse With such a dramatic conflict of interest, a post about how beta blockers might be “holding you back” has zero credibility. Of the prescribed beta-blockers, metoprolol was prescribed in 77% of cases and a hydrophilic beta-blocker was used in just 7% of cases. Overall, the BDI scores did not significantly differ between. Beta blockers are competitive antagonists that block the receptor sites for the endogenous catecholamines epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine (noradrenaline) on adrenergic beta receptors, of the sympathetic nervous system, which mediates the fight-or-flight response. Some block activation of all types of β-adrenergic receptors and others are selective for one of the three known types of beta receptors, designated β1, β2 and β3 receptors. β1-adrenergic receptors are located mainly in the heart and in the kidneys. β2-adrenergic receptors are located mainly in the lungs, gastrointestinal tract, liver, uterus, vascular smooth muscle, and skeletal muscle. β3-adrenergic receptors are located in fat cells. Stimulation of β1 receptors by epinephrine and norepinephrine induces a positive chronotropic and inotropic effect on the heart and increases cardiac conduction velocity and automaticity. Stimulation of β1 receptors on the kidney causes renin release. Stimulation of β2 receptors induces smooth muscle relaxation, induces tremor in skeletal muscle, and increases glycogenolysis in the liver and skeletal muscle. Stimulation of β3 receptors induces lipolysis.
Hallo zusammen, ich hab da mal ne Frage bzgl. Betablocker gegen die körperlichen Symptome der Angst. Von meinem Hausarzt habe ich nun gegen meine soziale Phobie, bei der die körperliche Symptomatik, der Tremor, das Herzrasen etc. im Vordergrund der Angst (quasi auch Angst vorm Zittern) stehen, ATENOLOL verschrieben bekommen (25mg) Below are some common beta blockers, each with different effects. Off all the drugs listed below, the most commonly prescribed beta blocker to help a person cope with anxiety or stress is Propranolol (Inderal).I completely disagree with this article. I am a Horn player, and have experienced solo recitals without beta-blockers, and with them. I agree that the mental and emotional aspects of performance are important to address, but beta-blockers can only help, not hinder the development of those processes as well. The general consensus among research has been that beta-blockers have improved(both qualitatively, and by more concrete standards) musical performance. Lastly, it is just as easy to play with energy and passion when your body is calm and under control. Conversely, musicians body with an uncontrolled sympathetic nervous response is like a Ferrari that takes a turn too fast and ends up in a ditch on the side of the autobahn. Not too great for your mental and emotional development is it. People end up totaling their ferrari in the process of trying to fix their problem holistically. My advice is to try beta-blockers and see if they help. Many regard the discovery of beta blockers as among the most significant medicinal advances of the 1900s. Although beta blockers are medically approved to help various heart problems, they are often used off-label to help individuals suffering from anxiety disorders.Hypoglycemia can occur with beta blockade because β2-adrenoceptors normally stimulate glycogen breakdown (glycogenolysis) in the liver and pancreatic release of the hormone glucagon, which work together to increase plasma glucose. Therefore, blocking β2-adrenoceptors lowers plasma glucose. β1-blockers have fewer metabolic side effects in diabetic patients; however, the fast heart rate that serves as a warning sign for insulin-induced low blood sugar may be masked, resulting in hypoglycemia unawareness. This is termed beta blocker induced hypoglycemia unawareness. Therefore, beta blockers are to be used cautiously in diabetics.
Beta blockers should not be used as a first-line treatment in the acute setting for cocaine-induced acute coronary syndrome (CIACS). No recent studies have been identified that show the benefit of beta blockers in reducing coronary vasospasm, or coronary vascular resistance, in patients with CIACS. In the multiple case studies identified, the use of beta blockers in CIACS resulted in detrimental outcomes, and the discontinuation of beta blockers used in the acute setting led to improvement in clinical course. The guidelines by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association also support this idea, and recommend against the use of beta blockers in cocaine-induced ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (MI) because of the risk of coronary vasospasm. Though, in general, beta blockers improve mortality in patients who have suffered MI, it is unclear whether patients with CIACS will benefit from this mortality reduction because no studies assess the use of beta blockers in the long term, and because cocaine users may be prone to continue to abuse the substance, thus complicating the effect of drug therapy. Herbal teas are similar to essential oils in the fact they also come from natural, botanical sources. A sweet cup of herbal tea can literally allow you to drink your way to relaxation.Even though it may sound like beta blockers are great for anxiety, they are not free of problems. In many cases they are ineffective for reducing anxiety and one of the unfortunate long-term effects is development of Type 2 diabetes. Those considering them to manage anxiety should weigh the pros and cons.Accordingly, nonselective beta blockers are expected to have antihypertensive effects. The primary antihypertensive mechanism of beta blockers is unclear, but may involve reduction in cardiac output (due to negative chronotropic and inotropic effects). It may also be due to reduction in renin release from the kidneys, and a central nervous system effect to reduce sympathetic activity (for those beta blockers that do cross the blood–brain barrier, e.g. propranolol).
Establishing the route cause of your anxiety and working towards resolving the issue is a far better way to treat your anxiety entirely and prevent long term problems.Essential oils have been around for thousands of years and have been used by many cultures including Chinese and Egyptian for medicinal purposes.
