ISTANBUL, TURKEY—A thirteenth-century city founded by Batu Khan, a descendant of Genghis Khan, is being excavated in Russia. Located along the Volga River, this prosperous city, known as Ukek. After the end of the Mongol-Jin War, the Great Khan Ögedei ordered Batu to conquer western nations at the kurultai in Mongolia. In 1235 Batu, who earlier had directed the conquest of the Crimean Peninsula, was assigned an army of possibly 130,000 to oversee an invasion of Europe. His relatives and cousins Güyük, Büri, Möngke, Khulgen, Khadan, Baidar and notable Mongol generals Subutai (Subeedei), Borolday and Mengguser joined him by the order of his uncle Ögedei. The army, actually commanded by Subutai, crossed the Volga and invaded Volga Bulgaria in 1236. It took them a year to extinguish the resistance of the Volga Bulgarians, Kypchaks, and Alani. In 1236, Batu Khan and the Mongol army crossed the Volga and invaded Volga Bulgaria. Within a year, the Volga Bulgarians, Kypchaks (Kipchaks), and Alani were defeated. Batu Khan then turned his attention to the Russian principalities. Ryazan fell in 1237, followed by Vladimir-Suzdal.

Evpaty and his soldiers use trickery to frighten and distract the Mongols and allow one of his soldiers to help Lada take several children to safety. He sends three soldiers on horseback to three princes in their cities, but only one accepted their request for help in fighting Batu Khan. He also ensures that the surviving people of his city hide in Nestor's cave. At the same time, his soldiers and Lada struggle to help him remember his current situation to stop him from attacking them. Batu receives ample treatment by George Vernadsky in A History of Russia, vol 3: The Mongols and Russia (1953). Although quite controversial, it surpasses the earlier work of Jeremiah Curtin, The Mongols in Russia (1908). A popular account of the Mongol conquest is Harold Lamb, The March of the Barbarians (1940).

At first brutal and irreconcilable in his treatment of the conquered lands, Batu grew tolerant and accommodating with age, allowing local native princes to rule their lands at their will as long as they remained loyal to him and regularly paid him the tribute collected among their subjects. He died in 1255, but his empire survived until the end of the 15th century."We made an impassioned, energetic, and action-packed film – an incredibly tender, awe-inspiring tale of indomitable courage," said Dzhanik Fayziev, general producer at Russia’s Film Studio KIT. Dzhanik Fayziev said the film blends history with the present day and fantasy with realism to tell an emotional story of simple folk who become true heroes when burdened with unanticipated circumstances.[6] Batu Khan,?-1255.Mongol khan (from 1227) and general, son of Juji Khan, and grandson of Genghis Khan.Batu led the Mongol-Tatar armies that ravaged Eastern Europe in 1236-43.In 1237 he invaded Rus'.In 1239 he sacked Pereiaslav and Chernihiv; in 1240, Kyiv.In the following year his army penetrated into Galicia, Poland, and Hungary and reached Dalmatia Batu Khan was a Mongol ruler and the founder of the Golden Horde (known also as the Kipchak Khanate, and the Ulus of Jochi). He was a grandson of Genghis Khan through Jochi, the Great Khan's eldest son, and was responsible for the expansion of the Mongol Empire into Russia and Eastern Europe As one of the oldest members of Chingisid Borjigin, Batu became a viceroy over all the western parts of the empire, controlling routine affairs among the Russian princes, nominating Jochid retainers as governors of Iran, and receiving in audience grandees from the Caucasus. At no point, however, did he openly challenge the authority of the Great Khan.

Dzhanik Fayziev, film director and producer, commented, "Serj Tankian is probably the only musician in the world who can combine modern rhythms and ultimatum tenderness in his work. He wrote an original soundtrack to the film that can rightfully be placed on par with the best samples of world cinema music". The filmmakers decided to abandon the reconstruction of historical events of the thirteenth century and chose to create a fairy-tale world with good and bad characters. Part of the filming took place at the ZiL plant, where the largest shooting pavilion in Europe was built.[8] This project is the first feature film directed by Ivan Shurhovetskiy.[9]

  6. Although the Mongols had defeated the Russians in a battle on the Kalka River in 1223, a serious attempt to conquer Russia, and perhaps Europe, was not undertaken until 1237. Exploiting disunity among Russian princes, Batu conquered their territories with unequaled brutality, and by 1241 all of Russia was under his control. While one of his armies proceeded as far west as Liegnitz (Legnica) in Silesia, where it defeated a combined force of Poles and Germans, Batu himself crossed the Carpathian Mountains and the Danubian plains to the Adriatic Sea and concentrated his forces in Hungary for a campaign against western Europe through the Danube valley. Upon receiving news of the death of Great Khan Ugedey (Ö gödei), however, Batu decided to return to the east and withdrew his armies to the Volga River, subjugating Bulgaria, Wallachia, Moldavia, and the Cuman khanate in the Pontic steppes along the way (1242).

Some of Batu Khan’s relatives, such as his cousins Guyuk and Mongke, were also sent to participate in the campaign.

At that moment the princess happened to be on the upper floor of the palace with her infant son, Prince Ivan. When she heard that her husband had been slain, she was seized with grief, and threw herself from the window with the child in her arms. Mongol Invasion of Hungary - About History

The great Batu Khan was the grandson of Genghis Khan, who, in 1240, imposed the dominion of the so-called Golden Horde on the principalities of ancient Kievan Rus, which disappeared from history. Having failed to obtain the title of Great Khan of Mongolia for himself or his ally Mongka (Möngkë, Mangu), Batu settled in the city of Saray on the lower Volga and attended to the administration of his own domain, which now extended from the Ob River in western Siberia to Poland and Bulgaria in eastern Europe and which came to be called the Golden Horde. Genghis Khan himself died six months later and Jochi’s share of the empire was divided amongst his sons. Apart from the westernmost part of the empire, Jochi’s sons were also given 4,000 Mongol soldiers to continue the expansion of the empire. Their ruler was Genghis Khan. □This military tale (The Tale of the Destruction of Riazan) survived in several sixteenth and the seventeenth century redactions and is thought to be a part of a miscellany that was composed and revised by the clergy of the Church of St. Nikholas of Zaraisk. According to the legend, the church is located on the spot where the princess Eupraxy killed herself. Given a form of a military tale, the later version of The Tale of Batu's Capture of Ryazan is a fictionalized account with some historical inaccuracies suggesting that the Tale was composed sometimes after the described events and was subsequently further edited. Tracing its provenance, textual analysis, and dating of various redactions have been conclusively resolved by Soviet scholars.

The first invaded Poland and won a decisive battle against Henry II the Pious, the Duke of Silesia, and his allies at the Battle of Legnica in 1241. The second group crossed the Carpathians, whilst the third group journeyed along the Danube. The three armies regrouped in Hungary, where Batu Khan and Subutai crushed a Hungarian army under King Bela IV at the Battle of Mohi (which took place two days after the Battle of Legnica).
